WebBand Dial-Up Outage Explained June 25, 2008

On Thursday June 19th around 3pm, we began getting calls from a few dial-up customers who could not connect. We noticed that each customer had a “clicking” sound on their line that they could not hear. When the problem was isolated to a specific area – west of Division and in Airway Heights and Cheney – we decided to run tests on our phone lines. After coming up negative, we contacted XO Communications (our telecommunications provider) and had them run diagnostics as well. By the end of the evening, we had determined that the issue was on the Qwest end.

So we contacted Qwest and asked them to look into it. They continued to drag their feet throughout Friday and over the weekend. During this time, we received word from you, our faithful customers that your dial-up service continued to fail. To help us speed the process along, we asked that you contact Qwest directly, and in doing so, grab their attention and hopefully promote a fix to this problem.

We finally got their attention Monday afternoon. By 5pm, we were working again.

Since then, we’ve been trying to get Qwest to give us an explanation of what went wrong, but we have received no word from them. Our best guess is that they were doing some work in the “central offices” in these areas and this work affected the service. Your phone worked, although anyone you called would have heard the “clicking”. This “clicking” or “noise” is what caused your modem to disconnect and keep you off the Internet.

First of all, we apologize for the down time. If we could have done anything to make it shorter or to keep it from happening, we would have done so. Second, thank you for being patient with us. Thank you for believing us when we told you that it was on the Qwest side and out of our hands. We’ve never knowingly misled our customers and didn’t start this week!

Thanks again for your trust in WebBand; we really appreciate it. Please let us know if we can do anything else for you.

As you are aware, WebBand has been part of a computer distribution program called TEConnections. It is run through the District 81 school district and provides computers to low-income families. The program not only teaches students how to build, repair and support a PC, but also gives them opportunities to interact with families via distribution and support.

This past year, the program – which is run through several local high schools – distributed 375 computers. Next year the program will reach out to middle school students and more families throughout the Spokane area. Below is a link to the year end newsletter. This is a great program and one that we are proud to be a part of. We look forward to another successful year starting in September.

Firefox 3.0 June 18, 2008

Tuesday, Mozilla released the latest version of Firefox. Version 3.0 adds several new features and is touted to be the fastest web browser available. I’ve been playing with the new program since it was released in beta a few months ago and agree with most reports – it is fast and very user friendly. Here are a few details on the new program:

Performance: The program loads pages a lot faster than IE or version 2.0. It manages memory better, as well as web technology, like JavaScript. This will increase performance as your surf the web.

Security: Version 3.0 adds an anti-phishing feature. This will alert you to websites that are trying to gain access to your PC and steal data. It also adds an auto update feature. This is a much needed improvement – patches and security updates will automatically download when they become available.

Awesome Bar: The address bar has changed a bit and been dubbed “The Awesome Bar.” Time will tell if this is truly awesome, but it keeps track of the sites you go to most often and will display them when you begin typing in the address bar. So far, my experience is that this is a great feature.

For a complete list of features, follow the link below:

We’ve updated our link to download the program. It is only 7MB – only a few seconds for DSL customers and very manageable for dial-up.
